Product Information:

Listed is a pre owned Winchester 1886 chambered in 38-56 WCF. This rifle is in good condition overall with expected wear from use and age. We would like to note there is a mechanical issue with the ejector spring, which will need replaced/reinstalled for the rifle to function properly. Other than the broken spring, there are no other known issues.
The 38-56 WCF cartridge was introduced in 1887 specifically for the 1886 rifle. Originally designed to out perform the 38-55 WCF and to give the 1886 a smaller caliber offering, this cartridge was designed with larger plains game in mind, but without the recoil of the standard 45 caliber cartridges of the time. This caliber was discontinued in rifles in 1910, and most commercial production of ammunition slowed in the 1930s to a full stop. 45-70 Brass can be reformed to make brass for this round, so it still perseveres in some circles.
The 1886 rifle was originally introduced in 45-70 and 45-90, with the lineup eventually spanning to other large size rounds.  Despite being originally designed for use with black powder, the action was strong enough to make the jump to smokeless powder with only minor modifications, and was subsequently chambered in the smokeless cartridges by 1903. The design has stood the test of time and new production models are made today.
This individual rifle (SN 39596) was made in 1890 and was definitely meant for use with smokeless powder. The wood remains in fair shape for the age with some small, shallow cracks appearing. There are two larger ones present. The forearm has an old crack that appears to have been repaired at some point on the left hand side that is barely deep enough to grab a nail and is approximately 5″ in length. The other is on the right side of the butt stock and is again just barely deep enough to grab a nail and is approximately 2.5″ in length. There is a small ding off the tang as well. All of these appear to be age/use related.
The steel is in good shape with the original blued finish having faded to a plum brown throughout. The top and bottom tang show the most freckling and pitting. There is some lightly scattered pitting as well. The bore on the 24″ octagon barrel of this rifle is bright, with some visible rifling left, and some spots of pitting. Again, the only known issue on this rifle is the ejector spring needing replaced and then the ejector assembly reinstalled.
This rifle does not come with a box or papers.
