Listed is a pre owned Winchester Model made in 1895 chambered in 35 Winchester. This rifle is in very good condition considering the age and would be a gem in any collection.
Chambered in Winchester’s 35 WCF (Winchester Center Fire) cartridge, this round debuted in 1903. Designed specifically for the Model 1895 for use on medium to larger game, the 35 Winchester took advantage of the box magazine and was designed for use with Spitzer (pointed) bullets to increase effective range and velocity. When the 1895 was discontinued in 1936, so was the 35 Winchester cartridge.
The Model 1895 also has the distinction to be one of the last lever action rifles John Browning designed. Specifically made to be the strongest action of any Winchester at the time, he wanted to ensure that it could utilize the new Spitzer style bullets and handle newly introduced smokeless powders.
This rifle is in very good condition overall. According to the serial number, this rifle was made in 1903. The original bluing remains about 70% intact, with some light thinning and scratches on the barrel. The receiver shows the most wear, especially the right hand side. There are light scratches throughout, and all the high contact areas show large thinning or loss of bluing. Despite this there is very little freckling, as this gun has been very well cared for over the years. The wood was upgraded prior to the previous owner purchasing it in 1959. It was replaced with a high grade, well figured hardwood stock. The butt stock matches the original straight style and has a plastic butt pad, while the forearm was replaced with a wider, square shaped forearm more suitable for someone with a larger grip or gloves. The wood shows some small handling marks, but no chips, cracks, or dents. The bore of the 24″ round barrel is excellent for the age, some very light frosting is present, but overall is bright and shows great rifling. The Lyman adjustable rear sight was a factory add on available at the original time of purchase and it exhibits similar overall wear as the gun. The mechanics on it however still work great with no issues. The lever action slides smoothly and everything locks up tight.
This rifle does not come with a box or papers.
